We take you for a drive into the Knysna forest and visit one of the remaining forest giants, an Outeniqua yellowwood tree nearly 700 years old. After we have finished gazing at the splendour of this giant we take a short circular walk through the forest. We then continue driving through the forest to the highest accessible peak in the area at Spitskop where the views are endless looking over Plettenberg bay, Knysna heads and mountains and forest all around, words and pictures cannot fully describe the beauty of this view. From here we follow a circular route driving through the forest. Evidence of elephants has been seen on this route including footprints, elephant dung, and trees stripped from elephants eating them. Then we drive to Gouna which has an interesting history of Italian silk farmers who came here with the promise of farming silk, the story was captured very well by South African author Dalene Mathee in the book her ‘The Mullberry Forest’. Then down through the gorge, up the other side, and back to Knysna.
A great trip for less active people wanting to see the highlights of the forest, the views and learn about the fascinating history of Knysna.
